How to Manage a Job Search During COVID-19

Searching for a job can be a strenuous process. As a job seeker, you have to find the right job, impress the hiring staff with your resume and cover letter, and ace the interview.

COVID-19 has compounded the already stressful process. Many companies have furloughed employees while others have employees working from home. Still more companies are undergoing hiring freezes. Job seekers are looking for remote work or work where they can safely practice social distancing. It’s clear that COVID-19 has changed the hiring process, possibly forever.

So, what does this mean for you, a job seeker?

First, find out if the company is undergoing a hiring freeze or if they have furloughed current employees. You may be able to find this information by going to the company website and/or looking at their social media. Many companies have made statements about their current employees or their hiring process. If you are still unsure, check LinkedIn for recent job postings or information. If the company has furloughed employees or is in a hiring freeze, it may be best to wait before applying.

If the company is still hiring, then this is the perfect time to prepare. You can research the company and its policies to determine if this is the perfect fit. If not, then you may need to keep looking. But if so, then it’s time to update your resume and cover letter. Once you’ve applied, there are two final steps you should follow. First, you’ll need to prepare for a video interview. Nearly all companies are conducting work remotely, and that includes interviewing candidates. We’ve already compiled a list of tips to help you with your video interview.

Second, you’ll want to follow up with the company after your interview. A good rule of thumb is to send a follow-up email within 24 hours of your interview. Job searches can be stressful, and COVID-19 has compounded the process. But you can still search for jobs during this time. Find out if the company is still hiring and prepare to apply. Once you’ve applied, prepare for your video interview and follow up with the hiring personnel afterward.
