Americans Consume about 3 Billion Pizzas a Year

Without agriculture we wouldn’t have one of America’s favorite dishes, pizza! Everything from the crust to toppings and everything in between starts on the farm. With 3 billion pizzas consumed each year by Americans, make sure you thank a farmer for that delicious pie. While, you’re enjoying your slice, check out these other 15 facts. 

  1. The word “pizza” was first mentioned in a Latin text written in 997 CE in southern Italy.
  2. The typical person eats about 46 slices each year.
  3. As of 2013, there are about 71,000 pizzerias in the U.S.
  4. About 1 and 8 Americans are eating pizza on any given day.
  5. 36% of all pizzas Contain Pepperoni, making it the most popular topping.
  6. Only 8% of people prefer cheese only.
  7. Super Bowl Sunday is the most popular day to eat a slice. 
  8. Favorite toppings around the world include: fried egg in France, sardines, tune, herring, and mackerel in Russia, mayo jaga in Japan, and coconut in Costa Rica.
  9. New York; Boston; New Haven, CT; and Trenton, NJ are the first U.S. cities to start selling the pie. 
  10. In 1933, the first slice was sold in the U.S. was by Patsy Lancieri at her Pizzeria in New York. Before this, it was only sold by the pie.
  11. Chicago Style was created in 1943 by a restaurant that later became Pizzeria Uno. 
  12. 1993, Domino’s dropped the “30 Minutes or Less” guarantee after several lawsuits accusing the company of unsafe driving. 
  13. The Hawaiian pizza was invented in 1962 by Sam Panopoulos, a native of Greece. He ran a pizza place in Canada. 
  14. The World’s Largest Pizza was 131 feet in diameter and weighed in at 51,257 pounds. 
  15. This giant pie contained 19,800 pounds of flour, 10,000 pounds of tomato sauce, 8,800 pounds of mozzarella cheese, 1,488 pounds of margarine, 551 pounds of rock salt, 220 pounds of lettuce and 55 pounds of vinegar.
