Stand Out During an Interview

Job hunting – we’ve all been there. While the entire process can be a trying one, it’s fair to say that the interview is often the most stressful part. You might be the perfect person for the job, but if you can’t prove that during the interview, you may miss out on the opportunity. Here are some tips on how to make yourself stand out during a job interview:

Be excited. When applying for a job, it should be a job that you are excited about. It is about more than just being qualified – you want to be excited for the opportunity, and you want the interviewer to notice this excitement. It leaves a good impression, and shows that you are enthusiastic about the job.

Be prepared. This may seem like obvious advice, but this means more than just being prepared for the interview itself. You should be prepared to be observed from the moment you enter the building where the interview is being held. The way you are with the receptionist is often reported to the interviewer. You want to appear organized, so know the name of who you are meeting with and the time. Your impression begins the moment you set foot inside, and you want to make it a good one.

Eliminate nervous habits. No one knows you better than you know yourself. You know what your nervous habits are, and you should do your best to eliminate them during the interview. You don’t want to seem too nervous because that can be very off-putting. If you tend to shake your leg up and down, cross your legs. If you fidget with your hands, clasp them together on your lap or on the desk. You want to appear poised and enthusiastic. Don’t let your nervous habits get in the way of letting you shine during the interview.

Know your introduction. Interviews almost always come with the dreaded “tell me about yourself.” Rather than fumbling to tell the interviewer random bits about yourself and your career so far, have an idea of what you are going to say before you go into the interview. Make sure to include skills and experiences that are relevant to the job in which you are interviewing for.
