When you hear the words job interview, what comes to mind? Are you excited or scared? Job interviews can be uncertain. While you’re trying to make a good impression, the company is trying to figure out if they’ll hire you. Often, companies won’t contact candidates until after they’ve interviewed all candidates. The entire process can cause nervousness and anxiety.

Companies want a candidate who appears confident. Having confidence can be the difference between getting hired or not. To boost your confidence, here are 3 simple tips.

1. Be Prepared

Employers ask several common interview questions. Each question serves a unique purpose and helps the interviewer determine if they should hire you.

Common interview questions include:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • Why do you want this job?
  • Tell me about your previous experience.

Prepare and practice your answers before the interview. You can answer basic questions effectively and appear more confident. When an interviewer says, “Tell me about yourself,” you’ll know exactly what to say. Preparing and practicing shows you care and have thought about the interview ahead of time.

2. Develop Positive Body Language

Have you ever thought you were successful in an interview, only to find out you didn’t get the job? The reason could be your body language.

Actions speak louder than words, especially in an interview. Two-thirds of all communication consists of nonverbal cues and behavior. If you want to appear more confident, you need to develop positive body language.

Having a good posture during the interview conveys openness. It shows the interviewer you’re a confident, competent individual.

Smiling can also boost your confidence. It shows the interviewer you’re friendly and happy to be considered for the position.

3. Superhero Pose

The final tip to boost your confidence is to power pose, like a superhero. It may seem silly, but studies show power posing increases confidence.

Amy Cuddy, a researcher at Harvard Business School, looked at the benefits of power posing. She found that those who adopt high-power poses before an interview appeared more confident during the interview and was more likely to be hired.

So, if you’re nervous before an interview and don’t know what else to do, pose like a superhero.
