Summer is on the horizon and that means many fruits and vegetable are in season. One yummy food to keep in mind is the zucchini, which can also be called a courgette. From bread to pizza, zucchinis can be prepared in a variety of ways. They also pack a nutritional punch. To learn more, check out these zany zucchini facts.

  1. Zucchinis are fruits because they flower in early stages of growth.
  2. The flower of the plant is also edible.
  3. The fruit is 95% water and has more potassium than a banana.
  4. Zucchinis grow best in temperate climates.
  5. The plant originated in Central and South America.
  6. Around 500 years ago, Christopher Columbus brought zucchinis to the Mediterranean.
  7. Italian immigrants brought the fruit to the United States in the 1920s.
  8. Obetz, Ohio hosts an annual zucchini festival every August.
  9. The world’s largest zucchini was 69.5 inches long and weighed 65 pounds.
