The best soil for growing pecans is in river bottom floodplains. There are over 1,000 different types of pecans and they come in a variety of sizes. The United States has an annual crop of 150-200 thousand tons of pecans harvested from more than 10 million trees. The leading pecan-producing state is Georgia, closely followed by Texas.
Pecan trees can live over 200 years and are native to Texas. They can grow to be 130 feet tall and during the summer, each tree needs 150 gallons of water per day. Even during a drought, their leaves will not wilt. The tap root of a pecan tree can grow 20 feet deep, but 95% of the absorptive roots are usually found in the top 24 inches of soil.
