Overview

To maintain the health and care of thousands of cattle, farms enlist feedlot managers to provide nutrition to their livestock. Maintaining the welfare of the cattle is the top priority of feedlot managers; they do so by providing appropriate feed portioning, delegating tasks, sourcing animal feed, and observing cattle health. Feedlot managers work with a team to ensure cattle feeding operations run smoothly and effectively.

Types of Responsibilities

  • Manage the purchasing, receiving, and monitoring of feed and commodities.
  • Oversee feedlot staff during day-to-day operations.
  • Monitor cattle health and welfare and report issues.
  • Delegate workers to receive, weigh, inspect, medically treat, and transfer livestock.
  • Develop department budget.
  • Maintain knowledge of USDA, FDA regulatory, and animal welfare issues.
  • Inspect equipment and perform minor repairs and maintenance as needed. 
  • Prepare operational plans.
  • Report feedlot performance on a weekly/monthly basis.

How to Become a Feedlot Manager

Many employers seeking feedlot managers require a 2- or 4-year degree in animal science, agribusiness, or agricultural marketing. Having experience as a cattle feeder or prior management duties can help to secure a job offer.
