- The plant originated from India.
- The plant was cultivated in India and China for more than 1,500 years.
- Slowly, eggplants were introduced to Europe and Africa. Spaniards then brought the crop to North America.
- By the early 1800s, white and purple varieties were grown in America.
- More than 60% of eggplants are produced in China. Other major producers include India, Egypt, Turkey, and Iran.
- Eggplants are also commonly known as aubergines. The word “aubergine” comes from the ancient language of Sanskrit.
- The name “eggplant” was developed in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The fruit was yellow or white and resembled eggs.
- Eggplants are technically berries but are regarded as vegetables when cooking.
- The berry is a part of the nightshade family along with potatoes and tomatoes.
- Eggplant has more nicotine than any other edible plant. But the amount is very low and can’t do any harm.
- Eggplants can have many colors such as white, green, purple, and purple with white stripes.
- Eggplants contain 95% water. 50% of the volume is air.
- Eggplants are known as “King of the Vegetables” in India.
