Cabbage is one of the hardiest vegetables to exist. It can be stored and prepared at a later date, which makes it a staple of many diets and cultures. Because of this, the crop has been shown in movies and television shows that are set in the winter. Many recipes and foods are cabbage-based, such as sauerkraut. While it may need extra flavoring, this veggie can be steamed, stewed, sautéed, braised, or eaten raw. There are many ways to enjoy the veggie. There’s also much more to learn about this fan favorite. Here are more facts about cabbage.

  1. It is commonly thought that the plant was developed in Europe before 1,000 B.C.
  2. The veggie was cultivated in China around 6,000 years ago.
  3. China, India, and Russia are the top three producers today.
  4. There are several varieties of the plant. The most common varieties are green, red, and savoy.
  5. A head of cabbage can be green, purple, or white.
  6. There are two types of cabbage: early and late.
  7. Early cabbage matures in 45 days and should be consumed while fresh.
  8. Late cabbage matures in 87 days and can be stored.
  9. The veggie is in season from November to April.
  10. The crop is closely related to broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower.
  11. The plant grows best in well-drained soil and a lot of sunlight.
  12. The veggie can be pickled to make sauerkraut.
  13. The heaviest cabbage weighed 127 pounds.
  14. The largest dish weighed 1,221 pounds. It was made in Macedonia in 2008.
