  1. While pears were first found in China, they are native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Today, the fruit is grown all over the world.
  2. There are more than 3,000 types of the fruit throughout the world. They can range from Anjou to Williams. Each type varies by size, shape, sweetness, and crispness.
  3. The most common pears are Anjou, Bartlett, Bosc, Comice, Forelle, Concorde, Seckel, and Starkrimson.
  4. Pears are easy to grow and grow best in a temperate, cool climate.
  5. The fruit will ripen off the tree and in a warm area.
  6. There are a variety of ways to enjoy the fruit. They can be eaten fresh, canned, or baked into a yummy dessert.
  7. This fruit has numerous health benefits. They have high levels of vitamins and antioxidants and can also aide in digestion and weight loss.
  8. The wood from these fruit trees can be used to create instruments, furniture, and other items.
  9. China is the largest producer of pears in the world followed by Europe, with the United States coming in as the third largest producer.
  10. The five states within the United States that produce the most pears are Washington, Oregon, California, New York, and Michigan.
  11. In 2005, the pear became the official state fruit of Oregon.
