Resolutions for the Workplace

A new year brings a new beginning . . . and New Year’s Resolutions! About 60% to 80% of people make resolutions or goals for the new year. While resolutions tend to focus on personal life, it’s beneficial to create resolutions or goals for the workplace too. Here are a few resolutions that should be easy to keep.

1) Ask for Feedback

Feedback is vital for any employee. Asking for feedback shows initiative and a willingness to work on weaknesses. Ask questions like “What could I be doing differently?” or “Is there anything I can improve?”

2) Be Organized

Organization is important in every job. It allows for efficiency, productivity, and focus. Clutter leads to feelings of stress and anxiety. Reducing physical clutter can lead to reduced mental clutter. When a person sees a clean, organized workspace, they tend to feel more organized and ready to tackle the tasks of the day.

Clean your work area and email inbox once a month. File papers away for safekeeping, find a place for all your tools, and delete old emails that no longer need attention.

3) Reduce Stress

Work is one of the biggest stressors of a person’s life. But there are ways to reduce stress in the workplace.

Stick to working hours. Don’t continue to work once the workday has ended. Continually working past normal working hours can quickly lead to burnout and can decrease the time you spend with your family.

Get some exercise, stretch, or go for a walk. Being physical in any way releases endorphins, which make you feel happier. Exercise also greatly improves your health. It’s a win-win.

Of course, there are many ways to reduce stress in the workplace. Other ways to reduce stress include meditation, creating offline time, journaling, and socializing with friends and family. Of course, you’ll need to experiment and find what works for you.
