“Professional” Email

As a job seeker, you may read this title and wonder: “Why do I need a professional email?” It may seem like such a minor detail, but your email is actually incredibly important – especially while you are job hunting.

Your resume is often the first impression a potential employer is going to have of you. Your resume should always include contact information, including your email. A major turn off for a potential employer is to see an inappropriate or unprofessional email while they are reading over a resume.

To keep your it professional, avoid nicknames, pet’s names, hobbies, or anything personal other than your own name. Also, make sure to keep it simple.

The best ones are easy to read, so it’s probably best to avoid numbers and symbols if possible, or at least keep them to a minimum. If your last name is difficult to spell, try using just the first letter or even your middle name.

Don’t stress if you need to fix your it. It is typically an easy process and should not take up too much of your time. If you don’t want to get rid of your current email but feel as though it may be inappropriate, make a new one to use specifically for job hunting.

You can use sites such as gmail, aol, or yahoo to create a new free email address.
