On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzer signed a bill that guarantees workers can earn up to 40 hours of paid leave per year. The Illinois General Assembly passed the “Paid Leave for All Workers Act” last week.
This bill requires employers in Illinois to provide their employees with a minimum of 40 hours (or 5 days) of paid time off each year. Employees can use the paid time beginning on their 90th day of employment, although an employer can allow employees to use it earlier. Employees may use the time for any reason. Any unused time can be carried over, according to a press release.
Pritzker said in a statement, “I’m proud to say that the General Assembly has recognized that struggle and passed a bill guaranteeing five days of paid leave for all employees in our state. Working families face enough challenges without the concern of losing a day’s pay when life gets in the way.”
Under the terms, this is available to both full and part-time employees. Notice is still required before taking the time off.
The “Paid Leave for All Workers Act” will take effect on January 1st, 2024.
Illinois is the third state in the United States to pass a law requiring employers to provide paid leave to employees. Nevada became the first state to require earned paid leave in 2020, followed by Maine in 2021.
